spring last year the contemporary arts programmer of the cultural centre in a town called sint-niklaas (santa claus) in the southern neighbouring country asked me if i had a contact address of the fine artist formerly rocking as captain beefheart. although don van vliet's current pastime isn't my most favourite subject - i rather like his 'chaotic' music and poetical lyrics - i tried to help him the best i could, hoping he could use the data and keep me informed if anything memorable would come out.

and he did! that is: hálf, because he forgot to tell me about the happening it resulted in! so i almost had only heard about this project when it would have been over, but fortunately the public relations weren't totally forgotten, thus this 'exhibition' was announced in a belgian teevee program. and one of the accidental watchers, rebecca vermeersch, was so clever to immediately warn the alt.fan.capt-beefheart news group.

after some fast and bulbous emailing (the organization of the show was out on the weekend) she came up with useful details, which eventually could be replaced by the official visitors information i received later. to get an idea of the festival, i'd like to give a summary of the whole program...

but even later it also would appear that the publicity machine had forgotten to send me the folder it had produced for the old media and public displays - totally ignoring the importance of 'open all day and night' websites like this 'electricity' which are meant for a specific target group, notably. however, by lucky accident another beefheart watcher, erwin mariën, spotted a specimen and scanned me the content of the small booklet - some pages of which are reproduced further on...

except for the data given in the visitors information, the announcement in the FOLDER includes an explanation which should be read first:

THE LINK BETWEEN ROCK AND FINE ARTS

at first sight there seems to be a big difference between fine arts and music. but less known is that between both forms of art some creatures have stood up the fine art works of which don't have to be inferior to their musical works, and the other way round (original text really says this - teejo). with rockin' art we pay homage to one of the most significant ones among them: don van vliet, alias captain beefheart. in our exhibition we focus on his paintings.

but rockin' art is more than a tribute. with this project we show a new generation of artists and musicians to which - influenced by don van vliet or not - rock music and fine arts are communicating vessels. like don van vliet, many of them are self-taughts who just by this developed an uninhibited vision and style.

rockin' art also shows a selection of drawings, pictures, plants, music and film by them.

in sint-niklaas about twenty PAINTINGS, DRAWINGS and TEXTS by DON VAN VLIET are exhibited. at the exhibition room you can listen to beefheart's music through means of headphones.

from photographer / film maker ANTON CORBIJN - who knows van vliet personally - there is a series of pictures, and the video film some yo yo stuff is being showed continuously.

it is possible to buy an english / dutch catalog with colour reproductions. there also are copies of the 'stand up to be discontinued' catalog from 1993 (but the very last copies of the deluxe paperback version got sold out soon - t.t.).

last but not least: along the exhibition part one can watch the documentary the artist formerly known as captain beefheart (on 11 and 24 february at 14:00 hour).

but there is more....

musician, composer and artist rudy trouvé (among others: earlier on 'deus' and now 'kiss my jazz') is presenting blowups. jazz musician and sculptor bram vreven experiments with sound objects. frans joseph goof makes a video plant as a tribute to van vliet, and adri karsenberg (drummer of 'krang') does something with image projection. and all three will be playing music as a member of the bands that perform at this festival (each time at 20:00 hour):

especially for 'rockin' art' he wrote this 'jazzno trauma'. an opera without point as a homage to don van vliet, brought by himself and johnny prozac.
* saturday 24 february: gore slut (belgium) = rudy trouvé
* friday 2 march: dj tom barman (belgium)
tom barman (from the begian band 'deus' - t.t.) gives a performance as disc jockey with music of beefheart.
* saturday 3 march: gary lucas (usa)
one of the most innovative guitarists of today. [...] in the first place he was the guitarist of the last magic band, the support group of captain beefheart. [...] but lucas also has a more than deserving solo career.

as shows from the reports below - although for authenticity reasons most of them are in dutch - the 'exhibition plus' was a very good idea, but i think: not optimally worked out. actually, getting the paintings was the difficult part, and it's amazing they were contracted - while the 'easy' side of don mainly was underexposed!

just óne (predictable) album to listen to in stead of a handy career overview (the dutch narrated 'cucamonga' radio special with the 'drumbo' recollections would have been a perfect introduction!), and no dive into the music history through album covers - nor the art work involved - or things like magazine or radio interviews . there even couldn't be bought any albums or bill harkleroad's and mike barnes' books (only the 'some yo yo stuff' video was on sale)! there also was no computer to surf for background information, and the only glance into the past that was available, the bbc documentary, just was shown twice...

the musical part of the festival rather focused on the 'double function' of the other artists - who had a right to get in the spotlight too, that's true - than on the unique music of the captain. 'influenced by beefheart' is nice, but except for gary lucas (and maybe 'jazzno trauma') no-one tried to cover a song or instrumental or re-use his material for this occasion.

like his poetry, for that matter. because what would have been more easy than to recite some of his poems or lyrics during the gigs? or some separate sequences of that? and music workshops? and er, and er..., and er..., and so on! not to mention the short time this exhibition has run and the lack of activities during the evenings of the weekdays (closed)...

on the other hand i realize that the organization had the circumstances against them - mainly because sint-niklaas isn't a big city, so there is a restricted amount of facilities. thus it would be a bit harsh to call this event a quickie. however, knowing that 'captain beefheart' is a name in music but 'van vliet' isn't really in art - although he should be by his dráwings - i tend to think this festival was terribly incomplete.

het eerste waar het oog op valt is een immense afdruk van de beroemde foto die anton corbijn in 1980 maakte van don van vliet in de mojave-woestijn. de foto is genomen op een cruciaal moment in de loopbaan van van vliet. vanaf dat moment zou hij zich steeds meer gaan wijden aan de schilderkunst, en verschoof zijn interesse in het voortzetten van zijn carrière als muzikant naar de achtergrond.

van captain beefheart and his magic band, de legendarische groep die van vliet sinds halverwege de jaren zestig had geleid, zou nog éen plaat verschijnen: 'ice cream for crow' uit 1982. op de hoes ervan een schilderij van van vliet en eroverheen een afdruk van die corbijn-foto die het einde van captain beefheart, popmuzikant markeert, en tegelijk ook het begin van de loopbaan van don van vliet, beeldend kunstenaar.

in de tentoonstellingszaal van het cultureel centrum van sint-niklaas begon afgelopen weekend een aan het werk van van vliet gewijde expositie. achttien in felle expressionistische kleuren geschilderde doeken en een zevental gouaches - voor een deel al eerder tentoongesteld op 'stand up to be discontinued', de aan de schilder don van vliet gewijde expositie die zeven jaar geleden in duitsland en groot-brittannië te zien was (en andere landen - teejo).

maar anders dan voorheen hebben ze in sint-niklaas wél gepoogd een verband te leggen tussen de schilderkunst en de muziek (begin van deze zin is niet waar: zowel in engeland als zweden werd óok de muziek onder de aandacht gebracht - teejo). los van de weinig aantrekkelijke manier waarop er met koptelefoons naar beefhearts meesterwerk 'trout mask replica' (1969) te luisteren valt, is vooral de poging van de organisatie om gelijkgestemde schilders en muzikanten bij het 'rockin art' genoemde evenement te betrekken, lovenswaardig.

zo zijn er tot 4 maart diverse optredens van door beefheart beinvloede bands. veel is er gerecruteerd uit de antwerpse muzikanten-scene rond deus. maar los van aankomende optredens van deus-voorman tom barman en rudy trouvé, spreekt vooral het optreden van de amerikaan gary lucas, gitarist in de laatste bezetting van beefhearts magic band, tot de verbeelding.

de reeks optredens werd zondag opvallend genoeg geopend door een nederlandse band, krang. en zo in het kleine, intieme museumtheater leken de weerbarstige intense liedjes van manuel krang ineens veel beter op hun plaats te vallen dan op een gewoon poppodium. met een van beefheart geleende oerschreeuw en de aan tom waits verwante ketelmuziek, won het viertal het belgische publiek in enkele minuten voor zich. krang fluistert en schreeuwt, lacht en huilt op het podium zoals don van vliet dat zo mooi kan op zijn doeken.

en wie de komende weken afreist naar sint-niklaas (tussen antwerpen en gent) om bijvoorbeeld tom barman te horen (niet als muzikant, maar als disc jockey - teejo), zal beslist met andere oren naar hem luisteren wanneer vooraf een uurtje tijd is genomen voor bezoek aan de tentoonstelling. toch dringt de vraag zich ook nu weer op, wat er nog van don van vliet te verwachten is. het muzikale erfgoed van captain beefheart is, zo zal de komende weken opnieuw blijken, in goede handen. maar eerlijk gezegd lijkt de muze van de schilderkunst van vliet in de steek te hebben gelaten. het meest recente werk dateert uit 1994, en die ongetitelde doeken maken een vermoeide indruk.

de vitaliteit en energie die zowel uit de muziek als uit de schilderijen spreekt, heeft plaats gemaakt voor somberte. of hij de laatste jaren nog wat geschilderd heeft, wordt op 'rockin' art' niet duidelijk, maar het beste werk, zoals fur on the trellis and just up into the air uit 1985 (zwart-wit afbeelding afgedrukt bij het verslag - t.t.), zou best wat vaker in de buurt te zien mogen zijn.

de tentoonstelling met de schilderijen van don van vliet vond ik erg knap. er waren niet zoveel werken te zien (wat we natuurlijk op voorhand wisten), maar de doeken die tentoongesteld werden, waren echt de moeite waard. we hadden ze alleen nog maar op foto gezien en dus was het wel indrukwekkend om ze eindelijk eens van dichtbij te kunnen zien.

naast zijn schilderijen vond ik ook de gouaches echt prachtig. dat onderdeel van de tentoonstelling viel dus reuze mee. ook de fotoreeks van anton corbijn vond ik fantastisch mooi. het deel met kunstwerken van andere kunstenaars vond ik heel wat minder interessant en hun werken verdwenen dan ook in het niets naast de schilderijen van don van vliet.

dan het optreden van gary lucas...

het museumtheater is een heel klein, gezellig theater. zo'n 120 zitplaatsen in zachte, knusse zeteltjes. men had ons verteld dat het optreden uitverkocht was, maar uiteindelijk bleken toch nog enkele mensen afwezig die kaarten gereserveerd hadden. de sfeer was erg goed en gezellig en het optreden veel reuze mee.

een anderhalf uur lang indrukwekkende muziek, waarin heel wat beefheart nummers. gary maakte een heel sympathieke indruk en vertelde ons wat grappige anekdotes uit zijn beefheart periode, zoals over 'evening bell', wat hij uiteraard ook liet horen al is het 'geen nummer wat je voor je plezier speelt'. na een bisnummer - met een democratische stemming van het publiek of dit op elektrische, akoestische of steelgitaar moest gebeuren - kwam hij persoonlijk zijn cds verkopen uit een koffer op het podium voor een schappelijke prijs.

voor mij is dit in elk geval een zeer geslaagde dag geweest (maar dat kan ook wel een beetje met het gezelschap te maken hebben), ik zou het zeker nog eens overdoen!

[on the unbalance between the art and the music:] the expo itself was great. i really liked it. actually, there were three albums you could listen to, but who cares about that. i went for the paintings. and they did have a very nice cassette-guided tour available. sure, they could have done much more, but that's a weak argument. it's the first time we had a van vliet expo in belgium and i'm glad i saw it. and a nice art catalogue as well. besides, most of the van vliet art catalogues that i have seen, don't say too much about his musical adventures either.

yes, you're absolutely right. and that's a shame. jazzno trauma ended with a composition dedicated to beefheart (some sort of howlin' wolf thing). but i think gary lucas came really close, playing some songs no-one sang along - 'sure 'nuff 'n' yes i do', 'sun zoom spark', 'evening bell' - and in-between songs, he told some nice stories about his time with the captain. i liked it a lot. a superb combination. i don't know if anyone taped the show, didn't see anyone, but i'd really like to hear it all again.

all in all, not the ultimate captain beefheart extravaganza, but a nice experience.
