INTRO

this is an old text, updated in 2000, when some big plans regularly had (to be) changed:

WHO THE HELL IS FREDERICK BANNISTER?
AND WHY SHOULD WE BE INTERESTED IN THAT BOOK ABOUT HIMSELF?

if you read the following press message at ease you'll find out yourself:

after much soul searching, my father - then 'frederick', now 'freddy' bannister - has decided to write not one, but two books about his life as a promoter.
the books will be produced as a limited edition and will be restricted to 1,000 signed and numbered copies worldwide. each will come in a unique presentation case, which in addition to the book includes reprints of the programmes, handbills and tickets from the music festivals. also included will be an album of photographs and other items of interest, such as newspaper clippings, adverts, flyers etc. from these and other events promoted at this time by my father.
the first set will be published at the end of march (2000 - but eventually appeared in early december, titled just broken even - teejo) and covers his first promotions from 1959 progressing through the 60s: weekly gigs at venues all round the country. it will include his meetings with all the best known groups and personalities of this exiting period, and finishes with the bath festivals of '69 and '70 and the '70 lincoln folk festival, and includes his personal recollections of finding the sites, booking the bands and the general mayhem that surrounds such events.
the second one,  which is scheduled for early 2001 (but easily can turn out to be áutumn now - teejo) will cover the period from 1972 to 1979 and deals with the american bands he represented and toured, his discovering of knebworth park and running the first festivals.
best wishes from henrietta.

so the happy few who can afford the luxurious 'knebworth set', should find out more about the following captain beefheart's concerts in the united kingdom:
25.03-06.04.72 'the spotlight kid' tour
05.07.75 knebworth festival
12.11-01.12.75 'come-back' tour
if freddy remembers right...

LATER DEVELOPMENTS

after a long process the KNEBWORTH COMMEMORATIVE SET became available in february 2002. being mainly interested in the captain beefheart tales, i found the price - 120 british pounds or 174 us dollars, without postage - too expensive for what might be just a few paragraphs. so i decided to lose interest in the publication.

unfortunately, doing so i also missed a handsome PAPERBACK version which was published in july 2003 and is much cheaper (thirteen pounds). actually, it is combining the two books from the commemorative sets.

THERE MUST BE A BETTER WAY
the story of the bath and knebworth park festivals 1969-79

england 2003 paperback bath books 978 0 954549 0 3
338 pages - many pictures - many illustrations - 25,5 x 31,5 cm

there must be a better way (the bath and knebworth festivals
            1969-79) - paperback england 2003

according to a promotional text, it does tell somewhere how captain beefheart saved freddy from a beating.... now, that are the things i like to read, but i fear the friendlier price of the 'compressed recollections' still is too high if you don't intend to consume the other 336 or 337 pages.

MORE LATER DEVELOPMENTS

freddy's historic documents woke up long-hidden memories in festival visitors who had brought along a photo or film camera or a recording unit. thus the bannisters were buried under more pictures, and - in particular - (very) good quality audio and film burnlegs covering almost every act and show. for copyright reasons the publishing company can't bring out the material separately, but it started to pass the ceedees and dvds on as free gifts!

thanks to the still-growing number of music recordings, this year [2004] the firm - which has reprints of the festival posters in its shop, too - created new buying options for the commemorative sets. so now there are several trimmed and cheaper versions for sale, which partly can be put together depending on the buyer's taste and interest. in other words:
