an email i received one day about the mama kangaroos project ('the world's only all philadelphia female artist captain beefheart retrospective') also mentioned: 'there has already been a vinyl single released from the project, a version of THE PAST SURE IS TENSE (from ice cream for crow) by synthpop duo winterbrief, who experienced an enthusiastic response to the song on their recent european tour'.  that tour took place in october and the first half of november 2001 - broken off because their essential stage tapes were stolen - and included the fresh material from the four track single which had been brought out a month earlier by a swedish (!) label, that only pressed 200 copies.

REVIEW

this half female half male duo produces a modern sound, but as they know the music of the past it's far from the common house / techno drones. with the additional help of a handful of synthesizers they play catchy songs, with texts to think about. in the present case where they borrowed one of beefheart's compositions the group succeeded in making a charming version which is great to dance to!
