captain beefheart - cover versions - the pilafian project - cd 'meltdown' (1998)

'the pilafian project has a mission to blend different musical styles into a singular listening experience. the common thread between the very different musical selections [...] is that they are all inspirations for improvisation.' in short: a trio formed by a tubaplayer called sam pilafian (ah, that's why), a saxophonist and a drummer bring a collection of instrumental arrangements of tunes from such diverse people as ornette coleman, bela bartok and themselves.

and also captain beefheart! they play DALI'S CAR from trout mask replica, or as they say 'a rock sound picture of what salvador dali saw while driving his car!'. but what'd you expect to come out when such a strange jazz combo plays a piece originally performed by...: two guitars? yes indeed, it really doesn't sound like the original. there's a surprising, totally different work-out of the basic structure which creates an immensely other experience, kind of alien and warm-trusty the same time.

and, it's amazing, they even play it twice! for the record ends with four extended versions of previous tracks - and one of them is DALI'S CAR. the rush hour version lasts almost three times longer than the first bake of two minutes, and of course contains a lot of further weird improvisations.
