of course, not all cover versions that are brought out are immediately noticed. sometimes the reason is that the release is very local, like in the case of this raw post punk group from minneapolis. long ago, in july 1990, they revised a twenty year old love song, which became a b-side in march of the following year. part of their obscurity is the question which jones they mean: jones from jonestown [religious mass 'suicide'] or brian from the rolling stones (you need to see the label for that)?this single with a remake of I LOVE YOU, YOU BIG DUMMY from lick my decals off, baby was one of many in a long series of new wave sounds by a small record company which stayed alive and independent long enough to bring out a 10-years retrospective a while ago. the double album includes a re-release of the track, but chances still are little this 'overhaul in a punky outfit' would ever have been spotted if the label hadn't gone on the web.
for a search engine coincidentally brought me to the cyber pages of sympathy for the record industry * 4450 california place #303 * long beach * california 90807 * usa * tel +(562) 989 9387 * e-mail Sympathy13@aol.com where i found out about this beefheart cover, and which offers the possibility to order it, if you wish to. remarks: 1. the double elpee version has been sold out, 2. mind the 'order minimum' rule, 3. listening to the compilation set can make you think you've heard 'too much of the same new wave' - but the ártwork is cool...
