BROADCAST 1

CAPTAIN BEEFHEART SPECIAL

country HOLLAND medium RADIO date end 1980
station RADIO 3 VARA program MOONDOGS narration DUTCH time 120 minutes

this program was set up to honour beefheart's visit to holland in the early days of november. but instead of playing the obligatory 'tribute mix' the program focussed on the less-known and unusual stuff, accompanied by explanatory chat in dutch. after a choice of beefheart curiosities like cover versions by spin-off group 'mallard' and 'the tubes', and guest appearances such as 'hard workin' man' it closed with 'mirror man' from the terrible 1974 tour (and from london!), followed by seven songs in an UNCUT PART of 24:30 minutes from the performance in amsterdam:

DIRTY BLUE GENE / FLAVOR BUD LIVING gary lucas guitar/ HER EYES ARE A BLUE MILLION MILES / ONE RED ROSE THAT I MEAN jeff moris tepper guitar/ VETERAN'S DAY POPPY / DROPOUT BOOGIE / KANDY KORN

as far as my ears can judge this recording has a normal pitch, and contains a discussion with someone in the audience about time and gravity which irritates the captain so much he even wants to stop the show ('wait! wait!) for a nice dispute...

[note: this report is based on a tape with only fragments from the program, and my own memory - which is pieced together too: i can also remember an undiscovered special on occasion of the release of '82's 'ice cream for crow' for example.... so it could well be that this broadcast in fact was of a later date (which was traced from an magazine article) - then the following 'elpeetuin' broadcast has been the earliest report of the performance after all.]

BROADCAST 2

CAPTAIN BEEFHEART LIVE IN PARADISO

country HOLLAND medium RADIO date early 1981
station RADIO 3 VARA program ELPEETUIN [elpee garden] narration DUTCH time 120 minutes

never mind the contradiction with the supposed meaning of an 'élpee garden', this broadcast brought us (almost) the entire líve performance. but in the control booth the radio engineers had done some editing: sets of tracks were interrupted by bits of chat and interviews.... this came out:

[1] (sudden start of) ABBA ZABA / HOT HEAD / ASHTRAY HEART / DIRTY BLUE GENE / BEST BATCH YET / [2] SAFE AS MILK / FLAVOR BUD LIVING gary lucas guitar / HER EYES ARE A BLUE MILLION MILES / ONE RED ROSE THAT I MEAN jeff moris tepper guitar / ONE MAN SENTENCE gary lucas poem / DOCTOR DARK / BAT CHAIN PULLER / MY HUMAN GETS ME BLUES / [3] SUGAR 'N' SPIKES / VETERAN'S DAY POPPY / DROPOUT BOOGIE / SHERIFF OF HONG KONG / [4] KANDY KORN / SUCTION PRINTS / BIG EYED BEANS FROM VENUS

note: those ciphers between brackets - like [3] - indicate the start of the corresponding side of the bootleg double album flavor bud living - which must be 'stolen' from this broadcast as it has exact the same track list, and the pitch is too high too! the interview was done by co de kloet of later 'supplement' fame, see broadcasts further on.

BROADCAST 3

48 JAAR ZWAARTEKRACHT...
[48 years of gravity...]

country HOLLAND medium RADIO date early 1981
station RADIO 3 VPRO program LA STAMPA narration DUTCH time 180 minutes?

this special which lasted several hours consisted of an overview of the musical career of captain beefheart and the magic band, mainly demonstrated by means of playing songs from the albums. to break the monotony the anchor man tells a background story, and short pieces of an interview by bert van de kamp are pasted in between the tracks (actually it were tiny parts from the talk that formed the base of his 191180 publication 'de vooruitziende blik van captain beefheart'). the radio show finished with material borrowed from the colleagues of the 'vara' company, that is: the 'mirror man' take from the 1974 drury lane, london concert, and the 24.30 minutes UNCUT PART with seven numbers (broadcast #1).

[note: this report is based on an incomplete tape of the program, and my own memory - which is pieced together too...]

BROADCAST 4

DON VAN VLIET ALIAS CAPTAIN BEEFHEART: CULT, MUSIC, ART?

country HOLLAND medium RADIO date 16 august 1993
station RADIO 4 NOS program SUPPLEMENT narration DUTCH time 240 minutes

somewhere else on this website there's an extensive report about this happening and the follow-up (beit for other reasons), so i shouldn't have to tell you it includes the two tracks ONE RED ROSE THAT I MEAN and SHERIFF OF HONG KONG.

BROADCAST 5

UIT HET VPRO MUZIEKARCHIEF deel 1
[from the vpro archives - part 1]

country HOLLAND medium RADIO date 26 november 1997
station RADIO 1 + 2 VPRO program MUZIEK TERWIJL U SLAAPT [music while you sleep] narration DUTCH time 180 minutes

while everyone was asleep unrestly people could enjoy a collection of old live performances in holland by various artists, including a 'rare' one by captain beefheart and the magic band with wasn't specified. or, at least, you had to wake up once to put in a new cassette during the automatic recording to be sure of taping the whole program. after all the mysterious concert turned out to be the 24.30 minutes UNCUT PART we already knew from earlier broadcasts (#1 and #3)...

BROADCAST 6

'LICK MY DECALS OFF, BABY'

country HOLLAND medium RADIO + WEB date 27 july 1998
station RADIO 4 NPS program SUPPLEMENT narration DUTCH time 240 minutes

the title of the program as well as the name of the broadcasting company is different, but in fact this was merely a slightly updated repeat by the unchanged supplement team of their 160893 radio-only broadcast mentioned above (as #4). no wonder it includes ONE RED ROSE THAT I MEAN and SHERIFF OF HONG KONG again. and although the show wasn't really new it had something sensational: that web broadcast has been the first captain beefheart special on the internet ever!

BROADCAST 7

CARTE BLANCHE: CO DE KLOET

country HOLLAND medium RADIO + WEB date 16 august 1999
station RADIO 4 NPS program SUPPLEMENT narration DUTCH time 240 minutes

this program in a series of summer broadcasts was announced (in plain dutch) as: '16 augustus, Radio 4, 20.00 uur. Captain Beefheart - Paradiso - Nov 1 1980. Integral! No edits. Remastered in de NPS zaproom!'. that was so extraordinary, i made a separate page for a thorough review on this happening. the radio broadcasts was great, but unfortunately the automatic pilot for the INTERNET part had fallen asleep when the program started, and only woke up halfway....
